GWSS<\/a> faculty organized sessions, presented papers, and celebrated their new book at the annual NWSA conference<\/a> in Atlanta, Georgia. GWSS faculty coordinator Julie Shayne<\/a> organized a session called \u201cThe Permanence of the Feminist Classroom: Murals, Archives, and Films.\u201d On this panel she presented a paper called \u201cFeminist Pedagogy + Feminist Knowledge Production = Feminist Archives\u201d about the Feminist Community Archive of WA<\/a> (FCA-WA) project she co-created and grows through her class \u201cHistories and Movements of Gender and Sexuality\u201d (BISGWS 302), offered this winter. Alka Kurian<\/a> was also on this panel and presented a paper called \u201cGender, Culture, and Human Rights\u201d about a film festival her students organized in her class \u201cGender and Human Rights\u201d (BIS 339). Kurian presented another paper called \u201cPinjra Tod: Break the Cage Movement in India\u201d and moderated a roundtable on \u201c#MeToo, Cyberfeminism and the Rise of Fourth Wave Feminism.\u201d Kurian is now writing a book-length manuscript on global fourth wave feminism. Shayne also presented a second paper, this one called \u201cWorking Around Anti-Feminist Publishing Hierarchies\u201d where she discussed her book Taking Risks: Feminist Activism and Research in the Americas<\/a>, and how leaving the tenure track created the freedom<\/a> to pursue what she considers feminist-activist scholarship. Lauren Berliner<\/a> was there to celebrate the publication of her new book Producing Queer Youth: The Paradox of Digital Media Empowerment<\/a> (Routledge, 2018) and present a paper called \u201cAre we the ones we\u2019ve been waiting for? Finding care and community through medical crowdfunding.\u201d Kari Lerum<\/a> presented on a roundtable discussion titled \u201cSex Work after the Future: Demand the Impossible.\u201d The panel engaged questions such as why it is important for feminists to study sexual labors and economies, and whether or not there will be sex industries after the (post capitalist) future. Karisa Butler-Wall<\/a> presented a paper called \u201c\u2018Picturing Possibilities\u2019: AIDS Activism, Disability, and the Politics of Belonging\u201d based on earlier work published in Disability Studies Quarterly<\/a>. Finally, Lee Ann Wang<\/a> participated in a round table called \u201cLaw, Sexual Violence and the Racial, Settler State.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
