The cybersecurity war needs more talent now, says UW Bothell cybersecurity expert
Barbara Endicott-Popovsky is the executive director of the Center for Information Assurance & Cybersecurity (CIAC) at the University of Washington headquartered at UW Bothell. She is available for interviews regarding the executive order on cybersecurity that was signed by President Donald Trump.
Executive order is a 鈥渃ritical step鈥�
Endicott-Popovsky, Ph.D., says the executive order is a 鈥渃ritical next step to knit together the efforts of the private and public sectors.鈥� Federal government agencies, she adds, have been 鈥渁sleep at the switch 鈥� they haven鈥檛 been grappling with the problem.鈥�
Cybersecurity vulnerabilities are one of today鈥檚 most pressing issues, she says. 鈥淐ouple this with lack of qualified people who are prepared to defend, and you have a recipe for disaster.鈥�
At 糖心vlog视频, CIAC is working to fill the nation鈥檚 dearth of cybersecurity professionals. The University has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education through 2022. The designation comes from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
UW Bothell also offers two degree options in cybersecurity, including a Bachelor of Science in computer science and software engineering and a Master of Science in cybersecurity engineering.
A national threat
Across the digital landscape, the federal government faces the challenge of creating partnerships across the private and public sectors so that, together, they can better address cybersecurity issues. 鈥淭he private sector doesn鈥檛 believe they are a target,鈥� she says. 鈥淭he private sector believes the Department of Defense should be facing nation-state adversaries.鈥�
But the nation鈥檚 infrastructure is largely owned by the private sector, she says. Thus, 鈥渢here鈥檚 not a recognition by the general population that cybersecurity is a local problem impacting them. Now, finally, we are talking about the problem.鈥�
